Saturday, July 27, 2013 – Psalm 14; 2 Samuel 1:1-16; Acts 15:22-35 and Mark 6:1-13

Acts 15:22-35 – 22Then the apostles and the elders, with the consent of the whole church, decided to choose men from among their members and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the brothers,

Yesterday, Phyllis and I took Mackenzie to the Toy Museum in Branson. It was fun seeing toys from my youth and before. In one of the sections they had Dennis the Menace dolls. Didn’t know Dennis the Menace had been made into dolls but shouldn’t have been really surprised. Every character from cartoon strips to television and movie had been. It was a lot of fun to go. Mackenzie especially liked the different dolls she saw there.

As we were looking at the Dennis the Menace Doll and I told Mackenzie a little about him, I thought of how I’d grown up with him being my “namesake”. When I introduced myself to others, I always thought of Dennis the Meance. At times my mom and dad may have thought I was too much like the cartoon character. At least he wasn’t an evil cartoon character, but a fun one.

Judas Barsabbas, a faithful follower of Christ had to live with the fact that when people heard his name, they would naturally think of Judas Iscariot the disciple who betrayed Jesus. Maybe that is why he’s referred to often as Barsabbas.

Who carries your name? Who might people think of when they hear your name?

As a follower of Christ, a Christian, we carry the name of Christ with us. We are to be little Christ’s, we are to be Christ like. I wonder how Christ feels about the way people think of him in relation to me? I’m not always the best example of our Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks that I can lift up all he did and strive to be like him as I live my life.

In our journey through the Psalms, today we hear;

Psalm 14 – The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind
to see if there are any who are wise,
who seek after God.

They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse;
there is no one who does good,
no, not one.

Friends, the fact of the matter is, all of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Thanks be to Jesus Christ who came to be the Word of God amongst us. Since we can be forgiven of all our sin, once we confess it and repent of it, may we seek to live the new life given us in and through the Christ.

Dennis – Dennis the Menace. Dennis one of Christ’s disciples, a Christian – like Christ. This is what I strive for.

O Christ, forgive all my ways that do not glorify you. Forgive me my many sins that draw people away from you instead of towards you. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit may you guide me to be more like you and glorify you through all I think, say and do. Amen.
