Daily Devotion Friday, July 19

Friday, July 19, 2013 – Psalm 7; 1 Samuel 21:1-15; Acts 13:13-25 and Mark 3:7-19a

Mark 3:7-19a – 13He went up the mountain and called to him those whom he wanted, and they came to him. 14And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the message, 15and to have authority to cast out demons. 16so he appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

When I read the list of the twelve, I give thanks for how through them God’s word has been passed on to us. These are the twelve whom Jesus first called, including Judas Iscariot, whom he I believe knew would betray him. From the eleven and then Paul, God’s word has been passed on to us and the church came into being.

Today, hear Jesus calling you to follow him; today, here your name in the mist of the twelve. He sent them out to proclaim the message. So he sends us out this very day.

O God, I praise you for the twelve called to be apostles, and give you thanks for how you call others even this very day. May I hear anew your call and sense how you send me out to share your good news. Here I am Lord, send me. Amen.
