Saturday, July 13, 2013 – Psalm 2; 1 Samuel 17:31-49; Acts 11:1-18 and Mark 1:14-28

Mark 1:14-28 – 14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

16As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake — for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

In this reading we hear Jesus saying a couple of things. First, “repent, and believe in the good news.” And then in calling the first disciples, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.”

When Jesus says repent, he is saying turn from all that keeps you from fully knowing and loving God and turn towards that which gives real life. He’s calling upon the people, calling us to make a complete U-turn in their life and beliefs and trust in him.

What do you sense our Lord calling you to repent of; turn from, so you can truly turn towards and trust in God who gives real life? What do you sense our Lord calling you from, so you can truly turn your life toward God?

We then hear Jesus saying; “Come follow me and I will make you fishers of people.” So, he says unto us.

For the next few moments, sit and hear Jesus saying unto you; “come follow me.” “Come follow me.”

Is there something(s) that keep you from following the Lord?  The first disciples left everything and followed Jesus. They entered into  a lifetime journey of following and serving God. May we seek to do the same beginning this very day.

Psalm 2 – He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord has them in derision. ….

12cHappy (blessed) are all who take refuge in him.

I give thanks that God can laugh. Woody Allen is credited with saying, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.”  I think God laughs often at how great mankind thinks they are. Yet we are only God’s creatures, part of God’s creation. I believe God; laughs, cries, rejoices, gets angry at the things we do. Today, I give thanks for the reminder that God laughs. I believe I give him plenty of reasons to laugh.

Once again in the Psalms we hear “happy/blessed”, today the Psalm says; 12cHappy (blessed) are all who take refuge in him.

May we seek to take refuge in God, in God’s love for us.

O God, point out where I need to repent and truly turn and follow you. Help me sense those things that keep me from really experiencing the love you have for me and for all people. Then may I follow you and do as you have called us to do be a fisher of people. Amen.
