Daily Devotion Wednesday, June 19

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 – Psalm 33; 1 Samuel 2:12-26; Acts 2:1-21 and Luke 20:27-40

Luke 20:27-40 – 36Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. 37And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.”

One of the privileges I have as a pastor is presiding at funerals. I see this time, the time of the funeral/memorial service to be a time to focus upon what God has done for us and celebrate the deceased life. For me it’s a time of sadness but also joy. It’s a time of sadness in that this one has been taken from us, but joy that he/she now abides in God’s holy kingdom.

In our text Jesus speaks of the fact of the resurrection to eternal life. God is the God of life; life now and life forevermore. This is the gift Jesus came to offer us, life – real life now and eternal life in God’s holy kingdom.

When a loved one or good friend dies, may we trust in God who is the God of all life.

A friend of mine sent me this song, which speaks of God holding us now. In it I find comfort for God holds us now as we deal with the trials and tribulations of life and promises to hold us in all eternity.

May this minister to you as it ministered to me.

O God, thanks be to you for the gift of life – life now and the promise of eternal life. Because of these gifts and the gift of your Son, may I seek to live fully my life in relationship to you the giver of real life. Amen.

Psalm 33 – 20  Our soul waits for the LORD;
he is our help and shield.
21  Our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
22  Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.
