Daily Devotion Monday, June 17

Monday, June 17, 2013 – Psalm 29; 1 Samuel 1:1-20; Acts 1:1-14 and Luke 20:9-19

Acts 1:1-14 – 6So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

It’s interesting to me that I just concluded a study of the book of Acts with a couple of my friends, finished it on Saturday and now my daily readings brings me once again to its beginning. Maybe God feels I need to hear it once again.

I enjoy the book of the Acts of the Apostles for it tells us of the early days of Christ’s Church, his body. This is a continuation of Luke the Physician’s accounts of our Lord and now the Church. I give thanks that this was brought together in one place, telling of Jesus’ apostles and of Saul’s conversion and then missionary travels.

Now back to the reading for today.  I hear often how we are in the last days. I know many people who believe we are. We might be, I don’t know for sure. I don’t worry myself about that. What I focus upon is living each day God blesses me with to his glory. It’s this day I need to worry about, not the last days. Jesus’ disciples asked if this was the time that He would restore the kingdom of Israel. This is what they had been looking for, expecting and wanting. Jesus responded to them and I believe to us;

“It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Friends, we are to be witnesses to the power and glory of God given us in Jesus Christ. We are to share the good news with others, beginning where we are and continuing wherever we may go. This has been the calling of Christ’s followers and will be until the end of all time.

So, my question for us today is; “to whom is God calling you, me to share the good news of Jesus Christ? A neighbor? A stranger? A good friend? A family member? We worry about what to say, what we need to do is trust in the Holy Spirit which will guide us as we have conversation with others.

This day, be open to God using you as an instrument for helping others know of His love, His grace and his peace.

Psalm 29 – 1   Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2   Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name;
worship the LORD in holy splendor. …

11  May the LORD give strength to his people!
May the LORD bless his people with peace!

O God, thanks for giving me the good news of Christ, not to hold on to but to find ways to share with others. Guide me as I go about my day, and help me share your love and life giving power with others. Amen.
