Daily Devotion Tuesday, June 4th

Tuesday, June 4, 2013 – Psalm 146; Deuteronomy 12:1-12; 2 Corinthians 6:3-13 (6:14-7:1) and Luke 17:11-19

Luke 17:11-19 – 11On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. 12As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, 13they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. 15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. 16He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. 17Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”

All ten were healed but only one returned to say thank you to the one who healed them. And to this one Jesus says, “your faith has made you well.” This one was healed of his illness, as were the other nine, but only this one was made whole for he understood the importance of what had happened.

In Jesus’ day if you had leprosy you had to keep your distance from others. No one could touch you, if they did they would be unclean. It was a serious illness with social implications. To be healed of it meant the lepers could reenter society, rejoin their families, go back to work.

Why did only one return to give thanks? It seems the others followed Jesus’ instructions; they went to appear before the priests. Having been healed it was the priests who could grant permission for them to reenter society, reenter real life. Yet one returned to say, “thank you.”

God has done so much for us. God pours out his blessings upon us daily. Yet, many go about their day oblivious to all God has done, never whispering a prayer of thanks to God. One theologian put it this way, “thank you” is the most important prayer we can pray, for it shows our gratitude to the one who blesses us.

This day make a list of all the things you are thankful for. At the top of my list will me Phyllis, my wife. Today is her birthday and I give thanks that she was born, she and I met and married, and have now journeyed almost 39 years together. I give thanks for her love and the many gifts God has given her.

A very blessed filled day to you. Feel free to share with me the many things you are thankful for.

O God, thank you for this day you did not promise me yet are giving to me. Thank you for Phyllis, for my health, for my call, for all the members and friends of Community Presbyterian Church, thank you for my relationship with you the giver of all true gifts, thank you …… Amen.

Psalm 146 – 5   Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God,
6   who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them;
who keeps faith forever;
