Daily Devotion Monday, May 27th – Memorial Day

Monday, May 27, 2013 – Psalm 135; Deuteronomy 4:9-14; 2 Corinthians 1:1-11 and Luke 14:25-35

2 Corinthians 1:1-11 – 8We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, of the affliction we experienced in Asia; for we were so utterly, unbearably crushed that we despaired of life itself. 9Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death so that we would rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. 10He who rescued us from so deadly a peril will continue to rescue us; on him we have set our hope that he will rescue us again, 11as you also join in helping us by your prayers, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.

Today, Monday, May 27th is Memorial Day; the day set aside to remember those who fought and died that we might be free. They gave their all. Please take time to remember and give thanks for their great sacrifice.

Our text from 2nd Corinthians lifts up the fact that many have also risked their life and at times gave their life for Christ. Even today, in portions of the world, some Christians are being persecuted, jailed and some killed because they profess and believe in Christ. Many of the early apostles died while passing on the faith they had in Jesus Christ.

So today, give thanks for those who died that we might be free. Free as a nation and free to share our faith with others. We so take our freedoms for granted, but our freedom has come at great sacrifice of many lives.

O Lord, I thank you for each soldier, each Christian martyr who gave their life that I might be free. Over the years, too many have died in battle, yet each life given was given that others might be free. Thank you for their great sacrifice. May I seek to live my life in ways that glorifies and blesses you, and helps others know of the freedom I have because of Christ’s great sacrifice for me and for all. On this Memorial Day gracious God, help me remember and give thanks for those who gave their life that I might be free. Amen.

Psalm 135 – 1   Praise the LORD!
Praise the name of the LORD;
give praise, O servants of the LORD, …

3   Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good;
sing to his name, for he is gracious.
