Daily Easter Devotion Friday, May 3rd

Friday, May 3, 2013 – Psalm 96; Deuteronomy 31:30-32:14; Romans 14:13-23 and Luke 8:40-56

Luke 8:40-56 – As he went, the crowds pressed in on him. 43Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years; and though she had spent all she had on physicians, no one could cure her. 44She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his clothes, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. 45Then Jesus asked, “Who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and press in on you.” 46But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; for I noticed that power had gone out from me.” 47When the woman saw that she could not remain hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before him, she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

This is a text that I go to when someone is seriously ill. I ask them to recall this text, this woman, who had been ill, even unclean, for twelve years. Jesus was going by. She reached out and simply touched his garment from behind and she was healed. I have them sense how Jesus is with us and we can reach out and touch his heavenly robe. I’ve never had a miraculous healing occur but I have sensed a peace come to the one I am with as they sense Jesus there with them and his power to heal them and make them whole.

Today, sense Jesus’ presence with you and reach out and touch his garment. Sense the healing that came upon the woman and comes upon us as we trust in Jesus the risen one.

O Lord, today may we sense your presence with us and how we can reach out and touch you. Through you we are healed and given new life. May we trust in you and know that you re with us. In abiding with you, we receive new life. Thanks be to you O Christ that the woman was healed. Heal us now. Amen.

Psalm 96 – 6   Honor and majesty are before him;
strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7   Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
8   Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9   Worship the LORD in holy splendor;
tremble before him, all the earth.
