Daily Easter Devotion Saturday, April 27th

Saturday, April 27, 2013 – Psalm 114; Jeremiah 31:23-25; Colossians 3:12-17 and Luke 7:18-28 (29-30) 31-35

Colossians 3:12-17 – 12As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.

This morning, Saturday morning for me, what did you go to your closet and put on? Right now I’m in my sweat pants, Boys & Girls club sweat shirt and a warm pair of socks. Later, after working out on the Wii, I’ll shower and put on my new pair of Jeans, a comfortable shirt and my tennis shoes. It’s supposed to only get up to 58 degrees and be  rainy off and on. So, I’ll dress for a pretty cool day.

What will you be putting on for your day?

Well, in our text Paul is encouraging us to put on; compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience, forgiveness and above all love. The Message puts it this way;

 “So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.
Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other.”

For some these qualities of life are a natural part of who they are. For others of us we have to continually work at each one. One I struggle with is discipline. It’s easy for me to get sidetracked from that which God wants me to do. And another is my temper. I used to have a very quick temper. Over time I’ve learned to not let my temper control me by me turning down the thermostat on my temper. I have done this by not letting many little things bother me. But when under stress, I find I can still have a very quick temper.

Today, clothe yourself in these spiritual qualities and the ones that are more difficult for you be prepared to have them tested. Focus upon Christ who shows us how each of these qualities can be lived out and be a benefit to others as well as to ourselves.

O God, thank you for your word to us, which reminds us as to how we should be clothed in these Godly qualities, qualities of a blessed life. May I put these on and to use throughout this day. Amen.
