Daily Easter Devotion Wednesday, April 24th

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 – Psalm 118; Jeremiah 30:18-22; Colossians 1:24-2:7 and Luke 6:27-38

Colossians 1:24-2:7 – 27To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. …

 6As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

A friend of mine, Paul, passes on his National Geographic magazines to me. In a recent one NG reported on “The World’s Largest Trees” The Giant Sequoia’s grow to be over 200 feet tall. The tallest, The President, rises to a height of 247 feet and is believed to be well over 3,000 years old.

I share that because I once heard that for all the wood a tree has above ground, it has an equal amount below ground. The root systems of these Giant Sequoia’s has to be immense.

In today’s reading from Colossians we hear; “continue to live your lives in him (in Christ), rooted and built up in him and established in the faith.”

As you go about your day, find a tree that is pretty big and established. Imagine how it has grown from a small seed. Imagine its growth below the ground, as you can see the growth that has taken place above ground; each year, new growth above and below ground. Then hear Paul’s call for us to be rooted and grounded in Christ. We are called to grow in Christ. This growth takes place within, as well as outside us. Some of this growth is in trusting in God and abiding in him through the storms of life, as well as the peaceful/very pleasant times of life. The deep and massive root system of trees is what protects them during the really stormy, windy days of life.

Today, hear the call for us to be “rooted and grounded in Christ.”

Our reading ends with the call for us to abound in thanksgiving. Hear these words from Psalm 118.

Psalm 118 – 1   O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his steadfast love endures forever! ….

21  I thank you that you have answered me
and have become my salvation.
22  The stone that the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
23  This is the LORD’s doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
24  This is the day that the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it. …

28  You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God, I will extol you.

29  O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
