Daily Easter Devotion Wednesday, April 17th

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 – Psalm 9; Daniel 5:1-12; 1 John 5:1-12 and Luke 4:38-44

Psalm 9 – 1   I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
2   I will be glad and exult in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

1 John 5:1-12 – 7There are three that testify: 8the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three agree. …. 11And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

While at Ghost Ranch, I met one who had grown up in a church; his father was one of the radio evangelists. His father had left that ministry when money became more important than the message. When his father left the ministry many people and family members turned on him. It was a painful experience for the son. Because of all this he simply sees the Christian faith as one that tries to build itself up and not one that holds eternal truth. In fact he sees all ministers as propagating lies to line their own pockets.

I couldn’t convince him otherwise. When I said, in faith I believe. He said, give me real proof.

For me each day is real proof. When God blesses me with another new day, another opportunity to worship and serve him, that’s proof and when the day comes that I die and rise with him, that will be the ultimate proof. But for now, today and what God did through his Son is proof enough.

In our reading from 1st John it is said; “There are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood.” The Spirit testified when it descended upon Jesus at his baptism by John and God said; “This is my beloved Son, whom I love and with whom I am very pleased.” The Spirit also testified about Jesus at the transfiguration; “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!” The water and the blood testify. The water could refer to baptism and our being cleansed of all our sins through it. Water and blood can also refer to how water and blood flowed out of Jesus’ body when it was pierced at the time of his death.

I believe because of how God has shown his glory to me. I believe because of whom Jesus was and all he did while alive on earth. I believe because of how God showed his love for us, through the sending of his Son, to die for all sins and rise to give new life. I believe and because of my belief I experience real, abundant, God filled new life. I believe.

What anchors of faith do you have? Why do you believe? And if you happen to be reading this and don’t believe, I invite you to open your heart to God and sense what God has done and is doing within you and all about you today. Believe.

O God, I believe help me grow in my faith and trust in thee. Thanks for revealing yourself through creation, through your Son and through the gift of your Spirit given to us. Amen.
