Daily Easter Devotion Monday, April 15th

Monday, April 15, 2013 – Psalm 124; Daniel 4:19-27; 1 John 3:19-4:6 and Luke 4:14-30

1 John 3:19-4:6 – 23And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.

I believe that most people who believe and trust in God want to grow closer to God and follow more closely God’s ways. That’s a belief I have and one that guides me as I work on my sermons and many times as I work on my daily devotion.

During my time at Ghost Ranch I’ve been reading a book that I’d purchased but never read. Faith Coaching: A Conversational Approach to Helping Others Move Forward in Faith It’s a different approach to helping one grow in faith. It’s a conversational approach. It’s a one on one approach.

Often in discipleship building, I or another come up with a plan for how one can grow in Christ; read Bible daily, pray, be quiet, participate more fully in the life of the church. When I or another “prescribes” this, most will not make steps forward because it’s not their plan.

In faith coaching, the person being coached presents a desire; “I want to grow in Christ?” Then the “coach” listens to their journey, asks questions, and helps the person being coached come up with a plan that fits him/her for how they can grow in Christ. It’s a very personal approach to helping others grow in Christ.

Our text calls us to love one another (something I could do better) and to abide in him. The abiding in Christ has been a common thread in our readings from 1st John. That’s something I also want to do better.

Maybe you share my hope of loving one another better or abiding more in Christ. If so, I’d be glad to have conversation with you about your desires. We can do this via the phone (once I get back home), by Skyping or have Facetime or in person if you live in or near Forsyth.

Pray about my offer. I’d benefit from exercising knowledge gained through training in being a life coach and from what I’ve read while away.

O God, guide us as we do strive to love one another more deeply and abide in you more fully. Thanks for providing people who can assist us on our way. Amen.

I’m headed home from Ghost Ranch today, request prayers for safe travel. Thanks.
