Daily Easter Devotion Tuesday, April 9th

Tuesday, April 9, 2013 – Psalm 146; Daniel 2:1-16; 1 John 2:1-11 and John 17:12-19

First hear a portion of the prayer our Lord prayed for us, his followers and then hear words from 1st John as to how we are called to walk as our Lord walked.

John 17:12-19 – 16They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 17Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.”

1 John 2:1-11 – 3Now by this we may be sure that we know him, if we obey his commandments. 4Whoever says, “I have come to know him,” but does not obey his commandments, is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist; 5but whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we may be sure that we are in him: 6whoever says, “I abide in him,” ought to walk just as he walked.

Jesus prays that we be sanctified, as he himself was sanctified. To be sanctified is to be set apart as holy; to be consecrated for a special purpose.

Hear Jesus praying unto God, his and our heavenly father, that we be sanctified; made holy, set apart for a special purpose.

“Sanctify _(your first name)_ in the truth, your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent _(your first name) into the world.”

Wow, Jesus prayed this for you, for me and for all his followers. May we sense how we have been set apart for the special work of glorifying God and sharing the good news with others. In Isaiah we hear; How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation,  who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.” (Isaiah 52:7)

I struggle with the reading from 1st John because I know I don’t always obey Christ’s commandments nor walk in his ways. I stumble a lot. Yet, I don’t think we’re called to be super hard on ourselves because it’s in the striving to be God like that we make some progress towards being God like. Jesus was the perfect one we are called to be the ones who strive to be like him, knowing full well that we won’t ever be fully like Christ – at least not in this life time. Yet, we are called to daily strive to follow his commandments and walk in his ways.

Today, know that Christ prayed that we might be holy as he was holy and that our goal should be to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and love our neighbor as we love our self.” Make this your goal. Finds ways to share the love God has given unto you with others this day.

O God, I know I stumble often as your child, one called to be holy. I give thanks for how you pick me up, put me back on your right path and guide me once again along your way; only to have to do it again and again and again. Help me keep my eyes upon Jesus who is the way, the truth and the life for me and for all others. Amen.

Psalm 146 – 5   Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God,
6   who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them;
who keeps faith forever;
