Daily Devotion Holy Wednesday, March 27th

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 – Psalm 27; Jeremiah 17:5-10, 14-17 (18); Philippians 4:1-13 and John 12:27-36

John 12:27-36 – 27“Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say — ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”

We all have those times when our soul is troubled. Maybe it’s because of something we have done. Maybe it’s because of something that has happened to us, or a loved one. Maybe it’s because of national or world events. Today we hear how our Lord’s soul was troubled.

Our Lord knew what awaited him. He knew that one would betray him, another deny him and all his disciples desert him. He knew that the cross awaited him. He could have chosen to save his own life, but no he knew the Father’s will and he knew why he had been born and lived; to give his life that our sins could be forgiven and we could have new life.

At times we are called upon to do difficult things. Things that we may believe we cannot do. When this happens, our soul may be troubled. We may wonder if we can do what we are being asked to do. Our reading from Philippians gives us the answer to our question, an answer to our troubled soul.

Philippians 4:1-13 – 13I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

So today we are given two thoughts to help us when our soul is troubled. First, our Lord’s soul being troubled, and his choosing to face his fears and follow God’s will, for he knew in doing so good would come from his doing so. Secondly, we have this verse from Philippians to write upon our mind and soul; “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Thanks be to God for our Lord Jesus Christ who was willing to go the way of the cross, and thanks be to God for this passage that strengthens us.

O God, often my soul is troubled over little things, at times I worry over the littlest thing. At other times my fears are real and my soul is truly troubled. In these times, help me trust in you, your guiding hand and Spirit, and know that you are with me and it is you who strengthens me. Amen.

Psalm 27 – 1   The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
