Daily Lenten Devotion Thursday, March 21

Thursday, March 21, 2013 – Psalm 27; Jeremiah 26:1-16 (17-24); Romans 11:1-12 and John 10:19-42

Romans 11:1-12 – 5So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. 6But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

John 10:19-42 – 27My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. 29What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. 30The Father and I are one.”

Today, I’ll be celebrating the life and witness of Valentine Jones. She and her husband were married for over 76 years. One main aspect of Valentine’s life that I’ll be lifting up is how one gift can change a person’s life. When she was 15 or so, the Salvation Army paid for her to attend the School of the Ozarks at Point Lookout, Missouri. This would change her life in many ways. It was there she met her husband. It was there she got an education that would help her in life. Both those things would lead to her visiting all 50 states and 8 foreign countries. Little did she or her parents know what would come of the gift given her.

My friends we each have been given the gift of faith in Jesus Christ. As the gift given to Valentine changed her life, so may this gift from God be life changing for us as well.

Today, give thank for special gifts given unto you, especially the gift of God’s Son, Jesus Christ.

O God, I thank you for the many gifts given me that have changed my life, especially this day I thank you for your Son, how not only changed my life but saved my life. Amen.

Psalm 27 – 1   The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid? …

4   One thing I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after:
to live in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the LORD,
and to inquire in his temple.  …

13  I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living.
14   Wait for the LORD;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the LORD!
