Daily Lenten Devotion Tuesday, March 5th

Tuesday, March 5, 2013 – Psalm 25; Jeremiah 7:21-34; Romans 4:13-25 and John 7:37-52

John 7:37-52 – 37On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Sunday I preached on the Isaiah text which invites us to come, unto God when we are thirsty. It wasn’t my best sermon. In a way I think I got up to the plate and hit a few foul balls, ending up with a fly ball which was easily caught by the right fielder and I was out.

So, let me try to say once again, what the text was saying to us Sunday. When we find ourselves thirsty for God and God’s ways, Jesus is the spring of living waters. As we drink from him, we will find our thirst quenched and our soul filled. Just as our bodies need water to stay hydrated, so we need to regularly drink from the spring of living waters.

Then from today’s reading from John we discover that as we drink of Jesus’ living water, then flows from us rivers of living waters unto others who thirst for God’s righteousness.

Thanks be to God for second chances to share His Good News to us.

Psalm 25 – 4   Make me to know your ways, O LORD;
teach me your paths.
5   Lead me in your truth, and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all day long.

As I read this, I thought about the joke about the student who hadn’t studied for his test. So, the night before the test, he put the text book and all his notes under his pillow and hoped that he’d get all the answers by osmosis. Didn’t work for him, doesn’t work for us.

It’s only by reading God’s word and through prayer that God can reveal to us his ways and teach us his paths.

God’s way is love. God’s path is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As we trust in Christ we will discover God’s way, God’s truth and God’s life, for that is who Jesus is. God is the God of our salvation as we trust in Him and seek to follow all God’s ways.

Today, seek to drink deeply of your Lord Jesus Christ, so that you might help others who are thirsty.

O God, thanks for providing the Spring of Living Water and for guiding us to it. May we drink deeply of you, and my you guide us to be a help to others this day. May you use us to help others know where they can drink of the waters of eternal life. Amen.
