Daily Lenten Devotion Saturday, February 16

Saturday, February 16, 2013 – Psalm 43; Deuteronomy 7:17-26; Titus 3:1-15 and John 1:43-51

Deuteronomy 7:17-26 – 21Have no dread of them, for the LORD your God, who is present with you, is a great and awesome God. 22The LORD your God will clear away these nations before you little by little; you will not be able to make a quick end of them, otherwise the wild animals would become too numerous for you.

The “them” is the many nations in the Promised Land. God promises that he will help his people overcome them little by little. I’m not sure how many times I’ve read Deuteronomy 7:22 but this time the “little by little” really stood out to me.

Often times at the beginning of the New Year as we are making our New Year’s resolutions or during Lent as we decide to give up something or take on new spiritual practices we seek to make major changes and often times fail. What would be better is taking little steps. This is one reason I decided to limit my watching of TV in the evening instead of cutting it out completely. I wanted to take some little steps that hopefully would lead to major changes in my life.

So, this being the 4th day of Lent, maybe you have found you bit off more than you could chew. You tried for a major change or changes and are already having problems doing that which you wanted to do. How might you revise your Lenten plan to take little steps this coming week and then maybe bigger steps the following weeks? As you think about this, always keep in mind that we are making these changes not simply for the sake of change, but to make space for God in our lives.

The reading from Titus gives us something to remember as we go into this first weekend of Lent.

Titus 3:1-15 – 4But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. 6This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Thanks be to God for what God did through Jesus Christ and how through this gift we not only have eternal life but have been claimed as his own.

O God, as we continue our journey through Lent, may You work the miracle of pouring Your Spirit within us and making us Your holy people. Thanks for what You have done, are doing and promise to do. Amen.

Psalm 43 – 3   O send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
and to your dwelling.
