Daily Devotion Thusday, February 7th

Thursday, February 7, 2013 – Psalm 116; Isaiah 54:1-10 (11-17); Galatians 5:1-15 and Mark 8:27-9:1

Mark 8:27-9:1 – 8:27Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” 29He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” …

Today, if asked the question who was Jesus, many people will say; a good man, a prophet, just another man amongst many men. What do you say? My answer; He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, he is the messiah, he is my Lord and Savior. I give thanks that I can confidently answer that question.

What do you say? Who was and is Jesus?

In our reading Jesus goes from preach to meddling when he said; “If any want to become my followers.”

34He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37Indeed, what can they give in return for their life?

As I think about what Jesus is saying to us, I realize that my response to what he is saying hinges on my answer to the question; “Who do you say I am.” My answer was savior and Lord. If that be true then as my Lord, I daily seek to hear what he is calling me to do, setting aside my wants, my desires, my wishes and do that which he calls me to do. Some days he calls me to care for myself, for I am one of his beloved children. Other days, he calls me to completely set aside my agenda for the day and do that which he sets before me. It’s a daily thing for me, even a moment to moment thing.

To what is your Lord, our Lord, calling you to today? Take up your cross and follow him.

O Lord, thanks for your great sacrifice for me and all people. Because of what you have done, may I dedicate myself to serving you and honoring you by taking up my cross and following you. Guide my heart and feet this day. Amen.

Psalm 116 – 1   I love the LORD, because he has heard
my voice and my supplications. …

5   Gracious is the LORD, and righteous;
our God is merciful. …

12  What shall I return to the LORD
for all his bounty to me?
13   I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the LORD,
14  I will pay my vows to the LORD
in the presence of all his people.
