Daily Devotion Monday, January 21 – God’s gifts

Monday, January 21, 2013 – Psalm 135; Isaiah 44:6-8, 21-23; Ephesians 4:1-16 and Mark 3:7-19A

Ephesians 4:1-16 – 7But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8Therefore it is said,
“When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive;
he gave gifts to his people.” …. 11The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.

Yesterday I preached on 1st Corinthians 12:1-12. I talked about how God has given gifts to all (each one) who follows him. We don’t have the same gifts but each of us has been given gifts. The problem is we can easily identify the gifts God has given to others and be blind to the gifts God has given to us.

At the end of the sermon I said, I’d talk about in my blog this week. It’s really nice that the daily lectionary provided a parallel text in Ephesians so I could continue my thoughts from yesterday.

This is something I firmly believe; God has given gifts to each one of of us. He has given the gifts needed for the building up and expanding of His kingdom on earth. I firmly believe that. Problem is too many who profess his name do not open the gifts God has given to them. It’s like they are still sitting under the Christmas tree unopened and it’s now well into the New Year.

Today, say to yourself often – O God, I know you have given me gifts; spiritual gifts for the building up and expanding of your kingdom. Open my eyes, heart, mind and soul to these gifts. Help me discover what they are and then reveal to me how I can put them to use through the Body of Christ on earth today.

Open my eyes that I may see, the gifts thou hast given me. Amen.

I’d like to hear what you sense God reveals to you this day. Does it surprise you?

If you need assistance with the exploration of your spiritual gifts, I’d be glad to assist you with this quest. We could do it via email or skype or facetime.

May God Bless our quest this day.

Psalm 135 – 1   Praise the LORD!
Praise the name of the LORD;
give praise, O servants of the LORD,
2   you that stand in the house of the LORD,
in the courts of the house of our God.
3   Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good;
sing to his name, for he is gracious.
