Daily Devotion Monday, January 7th

Monday, January 7, 2013 – Psalm 46; Isaiah 52:3-6; Revelation 2:1-7; John 2:1-11 and Psalm 27

Well, Christmas is now officially over. It ended yesterday with the celebration of Epiphany. Now we enter the period between Christmas and Lent. This period is now called ordinary time on the church calendar. I don’t know about you, but I feel we live in the midst of anything but ordinary time. On the news they are already talking about the next big fight in Washington. We didn’t fall off the Fiscal Cliff, but now we have to face the issue of borrowing limits. These are huge issues for the future of our country. I pray for clear minds of congressmen and women and senators who can listen to one another, speak their piece clearly and seek the common good of all. Then we have the NFL playoffs with the Denver Broncos (I’ve been a fan of theirs since I was a little child) with a really good chance of making the Super Bowl. We’ll see, but that is anything but ordinary. I could go on. I don’t see this time as being really as ordinary time. What I sense is that things are a changing, hopefully for the good not for bad.

In the midst of a lot of unknowns, in the midst of changes taking place with us and around us, what do we hold on to? Where is our anchor? From today’s Psalms we hear;

Psalm 46 – 1   God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 27 – 1   The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid? ….

My friends, God was, God is and God will always be GOD. Nothing is ever going to change that.

The next couple of verses from Psalm 46 states;

 2   Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
3   though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

In the midst of all the uncertainties of life, in the midst of all the changes taking place within us and all about us, may we trust in God; knowing that God loves us and is over all that is. And may one of our prayers be;

Psalm 27:11  Teach me your way, O LORD,
and lead me on a level path

O God, you are our level path, as well as being our solid rock on which we can stand. May we place our full faith and trust in you. Amen.

Word for Monday – compassion; find a way to show compassion to someone today.
