Daily Devotion Wednesday, January 2nd

Wednesday, January 2, 2013 – Psalm 9; Genesis 12:1-7; Hebrews 11:1-12 and John 6:35-42, 48-51

In our readings from Hebrews and Genesis we hear about faith. Hebrews has the best definition of faith that I know of.  In Genesis we read of Abraham acting on faith, leaving the land he had known for the land of promise. Now that’s an act of faith to hear God’s call, act on it, not knowing exactly where it will lead.

Hebrews 11:1-12 – 1Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

8By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going.

Genesis 12:1-7 – 1Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him;

From the gospel of John we hear;

John 6:35-42, 48-51 – 35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. …..51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

Friends; heaven is something that we believe in but we have not seen. We accept the fact of heaven by faith. In believing in heaven, we believe in eternal life. The fact of eternal life comes upon our death. By faith we live day by day with the reality of eternal life. Eternal life doesn’t simply begin when we die, our eternal life with God begins the moment faith in Christ is born in us. It begins or is a reality even today.

So we live by faith, and act by faith in the living God who promises us life now and life forever more.

May our life today, be a beacon of hope to others.

Today being Wednesday, my focus will be upon humility. I’m going to strive to not think of myself as being better than anyone, only their equal.

Psalm 9 – 1   I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
2   I will be glad and exult in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
