Daily Devotion Tuesday, January 1 - New Year's Day

Tuesday, January 1, 2013 – Psalm 8; Genesis 17:1-12a, 15-16; Colossians 2:6-12 and John 16:23b-30

First things first – Happy Blessed New Year – 2,013th year of our Lord.

Psalm 8 – 1   O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

     You have set your glory above the heavens.
2        Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.

3   When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
4   what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?

5   Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
6   You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
7   all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
8   the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

9   O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Psalm 8 is one of my favorite Psalms. It’s a great one for today, the first day of a New Year. Today we mark the earth’s beginning another rotation around the Sun. The earth has been doing this for-  let’s just say for a very long time. It was God’s design (I don’t worry about the big bang or other theories, for however it was accomplished I believe God did it) and the earth has been doing this simple dance around the sun, year after year after year. God created the universe and all that is in it. God created the earth and placed us upon it. The Psalm asks; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? And then answers;

5   Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
6   You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,

In many, many ways people have made a mess of things and continue to make a mess of things. I remember a conversation I had with my dad and mom when I was a older teen. I said; “your generation has really made a mess of things, my generation is going to clean it all up. They should have laughed at me, but they didn’t. I sadly chuckle today at what I said; for my generation hasn’t done a very good job with cleaning things up, in fact we now live in a time where almost everything is disposable. I give thanks for all the recycling programs that go on, but dumps keep getting higher and higher and higher.

From Colossians today we hear;

Colossians 2:6-12 – 6As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Throughout this New Year, may we make it our goal to be rooted and built up in Christ.

God is giving us a New Year that he did not promise us, yet He is giving it to us. What will we make of it? What will be do with the 525,600 minutes of this year? My goal is to seek to make this a little bit better place for Mackenzie, my granddaughter who will turn six during this year. My other goal is to seek to do what I said yesterday; clothe myself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and most importantly love.

What is a goal you have for 2013? What resolution have you made?

Again, happy blessed New Year to you and yours.

O God may we seek to be faithful unto you, who has been the God of faithfulness and love since the beginning of all time and will be even into the eternity of all time. Lord, may we be faithful in our use of our minutes, hours, days, months and years. Amen.
