Daily Devotion Saturday, December 29th

Saturday, December 29, 2012 – Psalm 96; Isaiah 12:1-6; Revelation 1:1-8 and John 7:37-52

John 7:37-52 – 37On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

One of the things about reading scripture regularly, is that every once in a while something new will jump out at you. You’ve read it many times before, but this time it jumped out and grabbed your attention. That happened to me in today’s reading from John.

I’ve always thought of Jesus as being the spring of eternal water, but today I hear “Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.” Friends;  Out of the believer’s heart; out of my heart, out of your heart will flow rivers of living water. Wow! Now this only happens as we tap into the source of eternal water, namely tap into our Lord Jesus Christ. So that’s the first step. But the second is seeing ourselves as one through whom the eternal waters of life flows. Each and every one of us, not just a chosen few, but all who believe and trust in Christ becomes a river for the grace of God given in Jesus Christ.

The text Jesus is quoting is Isaiah 58:11 –

The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.

Another important text from Isaiah around this theme is 55:1 –

Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Today, focus upon this fact – “Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.” Tap into the source of eternal waters, eternal life and then see yourself as a river of this wonderful gift of God.

Psalm 96 – 1   O sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all the earth.
2   Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
3   Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples.
4   For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;
he is to be revered above all gods.

O Lord, may my life be a song, sung unto thee and a river of your eternal waters of life, one that draws people to the waters of eternal life, offered and given through Christ. Amen.
