Daily Devotion Saturday, December 22nd

Saturday, December 22, 2012 – Psalm 80; Isaiah 31:1-9; Revelation 21:22-22:5 and Luke 1:39-48a (48b-56)

Luke 1:39-48a (48b-56) – 46And Mary said,
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47       and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48  for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49  for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.

Mary, the one blessed to carry and give birth to the savior of the world, gave thanks for all that God had done and was doing through her. She was the blessed one. I give thanks that a lowly 13 or 14 year old of Nazareth was chosen to carry the Christ child. I believe she was chosen because of her faithful heart and willing Spirit. What a gift she was given. The one to be John the Baptist (in the sixth month in Elizabeth’s womb) recognized the importance of this one who was just now conceived – just days old in the womb). All this is pretty amazing if you ask me.

Here’s Mary’s song better known as the Magnificat in English. Really like this version and the slides with it.

Magnificat (All That I Am) by David Haas

Here are a couple of things I think we can all say; “all praise to God, who brings new life within me.” And from our text; Holy is God’s name, who has done and is doing great things for me, for all.

As God conceived a new thing in Mary, our Lord Jesus Christ, so God does conceive new things in you and me. Trust in God and rely upon God who is Holy.

O God, it’s kind of scary to think of you doing a new thing through me, but yet you have done this through your people throughout all time. So, why should today be no different. So, gracious God as you conceived a new thing through Mary’s openness to being your instrument, may we be open to your doing a new thing through me, through all of us today. Help raise up a new thing in Washington DC and around the world. Amen.
