Daily Devotion Friday, December 21st

Friday, December 21, 2012 – Psalm 130; Isaiah 29:9-24; Revelation 21:9-21 and Luke 1:26-38

For the first time in a long time, I slept in past 5:30 am. Guess I was really tired, or just still getting over my nuisance cold.  But now at 11:40 I’ll get off my normal pre 7 am devotion.

Psalm 130 – I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.

O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem.

Luke 1:26-38 – 26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 36And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

I’m always struck this time of year with Mary’s openness to God’s Spirit doing this new thing within her. Here she is at probably 13 or 14, and carrying the gift of God unto all the world. Am I as willing today to carry the gift of God unto others? Mary responded – “Here am I, the servant of the Lord, let it be with me according to your word.” So, may we all respond, “Here am I, a servant of the Lord. Use me. May your light and love given through your Son, shine through me this day. Amen.

We continue to wait, but it’s only 4 more days till Christmas. We have family coming in tonight from Wichita, KS and will have one celebration on Saturday, then have the regular Christmas celebration on Christmas day. Phyllis and I get to share in our Christmas Eve services this year, Community Presbyterian at 5 pm and Ozark Presbyterian  at 7 pm.

May God continue to be blessed by all our preparations for the celebration of His Son’s birth and may His Son be the center of our attention, now and always. Amen.
