Devotion Day 87 – Through the Bible in 90 Days

Day 87 – Jude 1 – Revelation 17:18

I read Revelation 1 – 8 yesterday. It was nice to take a little slower pace to the readings.

I’ve always liked the reminder from Revelation that Jesus is “the Alpha and the Omega, who is, who was and who is to come the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8) And then again in 17 & 18 of chapter one it is stated;

“Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. (Revelation 1:17b-18)

When I get worried about things on earth, things going on around me, these words are a helpful reminder. I’m called to trust in the one who created all that is and will be around even when all this passes away. Nothing in this life is going to change that. So, may I trust in God.

Following the opening words we have the messages to the seven churches, given by God to the angel/messenger of each church. That’s something I hadn’t picked up on before. God’s message is given to the angel of the church, not directly to the church. Not sure what to make of that, except to note it for now.

The seven churches were located in what is now Western Turkey.

Of the seven churches, the message that has always jumped out to me is the one to the church in Laodicea.

14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:

These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.

What always jumps out at me are the words; “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!”  When I read these words I sense that I am not on fire for the Lord nor am I cold towards his words to me (thanks be to God), yet these words always convicts me to get going and be on fire for the Lord.

What would that look like? I’d be more diligent in using each and every day as a day to really serve the Lord and share his love. I do this, but not as diligently as I should. I’d also seek to really love the Lord our God with ALL my heart, soul, mind and strength and really LOVE my neighbor as I love myself. I guess those two things are really very related, as one would lead to the other.

Which message to the seven churches of province of Asia stood out to you? Spoke to you?

O Lord, who is and who was and who will always be may you fan the spark you have placed deep within me so that it helps light a fire within me and under me to help me really love you and serve you with my whole being and be one of your instruments of guiding others to know that you are God; the Almighty One; the Holy One; True and Pure Love. Amen.

Next readings Day 88 – Revelation 18:1 – 22:21 (or if you want to do as I’m doing Revelation 9 – 16 and then Day 89 would be Revelation 17 – 22 and Day 90 will be a summation of my thoughts on the 90 days through the Bible.
