Devotion Day 84 - Through the Bible in 90 days

Day 84 – 1st Thessalonians 1:1 – Philemon 25 (Philemon is only one chapter long.) So we’ll be reading 1st & 2nd Thessalonians; 1st and 2nd Timothy; Titus and Philemon all short books of the Bible.

If you read all of that, which I hope you did, you can now say you read six books of the Bible in one day.

I enjoy reading 1st & 2nd Timothy and Titus because they are written to individuals and Paul is giving them a bit of advice. Within these letters I see reminders to myself and all the elders of the church, concerning the gifts given them at their ordination, when hands were laid upon them. If you are an elder you might want to look at 1st Timothy 4:14, 2nd Timothy 1:6 and 13.

Here’s the passage I want to focus on this morning. 2nd Timothy 2:11-13. This is something Paul wanted Timothy to keep before him and place before the people he taught.

11 Here is a trustworthy saying:

If we died with him,
we will also live with him;
12 if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;
13 if we are faithless,
he remains faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.

God’s very nature is faithfulness and this is what God will be. I think now that we are nearing the end of our reading of God’s word in 90 days, this has become apparent. God’s people, people in general, are not faithful toward God or toward one another. But God through all this is faithful.

Today, in worship we’ll begin our Advent journey toward the one born in Bethlehem. God was faithful in sending his Son, may we strive to be faithful unto God who is always faithful and keeps and fulfills all his promises.

Here’s a benediction from 2nd Thessalonians 2:16-17 that I’ll end with today.

16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

May you hear those words of Paul being spoken to you this day.

O God, as we near the end of our readings from you word, may we begin even now to be thinking about how we can be anchored in you and your word the rest of this year and throughout the rest of our life. Thank you for these letters which remind us of our high calling to be your people, your sons and daughters. May we strive to be faithful as you are faithful unto us. Amen.
