Devotion Day 78 – Through the Bible in 90 Days

Day 78 – Acts 6:8 – 16:37

The disciples plus Saul/Paul go out and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In today’s reading we hear how the doors of fellowship with God were flung wide open to all: Jews, Gentiles, people of all lands and nations.

When Paul was in Antioch, he said the following that still applies today.

38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses. (Acts 13:38-39)

When we get into the Epistles, we will hear more about Paul’s theology of justification by faith alone.

In our readings today, we heard how the Spirit revealed unto Peter and then the whole body of believers that Jesus had died and risen not just for the Jews, but for all people. In Acts 10 we heard of Peter’s vision of the large sheet descending from heaven with all kinds of four-footed animals, reptiles and birds. In this reading we heard God say unto Peter, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” (Acts 10:15b) Peter then went unto Cornelius (a gentile) and shared the faith with him and his family. They believed and were baptized.

Friends it is through what God did through Jesus the Christ his life, death and resurrection that we are made clean. As we believe and trust in Christ our sins are washed away. Way back in Psalms 51 we read and heard this prayer which applies even today.

Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin. …

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. …

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Thanks be to God, that through Christ God does just this and offers it to every single solitary person on earth. As the apostles found ways to share the Gospel in their day, may we find ways to share with others the Good News of Jesus Christ. God has flung wide the portals of his heart, may we share his deep and abiding love with others

O God, through Christ you have reached out to all. May we who already believe deepen our trust in you. May those who don’t believe come to know that you died for them and that through faith in you their sins can be forgiven and they can receive the gift of new life. Thanks be to you, O Christ, that through your love we are justified and made right with God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

By the way; I discovered that way back on day 74 I mentioned a website that shows the parallel readings in the Gospels, but failed to insert the link to that website. Here it is. You might find it interesting.
