Devotion Day 77 - Through the Bible in 90 Days

Day 77 – John 15:18 – Acts 6:7

Today what I want to focus upon is the gift of the Holy Spirit given unto the disciples and now unto us. We hear about them receiving it in John and in Acts.

In John we hear of it in John 20:21-23.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Then in Acts we hear of the disciples receiving the Holy Spirit upon the day of Pentecost; Acts 2:1-4.

2:1  When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

If you haven’t been doing all the readings, you might want to read all of Acts 2, as it really shows how the Spirit came upon them and the disciples were able to share the Good News with people from many different lands.

Today, focus upon either of these texts and sense how God has given you the gift of the Holy Spirit, and how it is God’s Spirit that is within us that enables us to do the many Godly things we are called to do. For me the Spirit is God’s ever present presence that abides in me. It is what guides me as I seek to do the good, Godly work each and every day.

Something you might want to do is take a deep breath out; exhale as deeply as you can. Then hold that for a little while and then take a deep breath in, and hold that for as long as you can. What I hope that you sense is how when you inhaled deeply, the oxygen taken in began to immediately give you life. So it is with the gift of the Holy Spirit, as God’s Spirit abides in us and we in God it immediately begins to give us new life.

Thanks be to you, O God, for the gift of the Holy Spirit which enables us to do all the Godly things our Lord Jesus Christ calls us to do. Today, O God, may we hear our Lord saying unto us; “peace be with you! Receive my Spirit.” Amen.
