Devotion Day 76 - Reading through the Bible in 90 days

Day 76 – John 6:1 – 15:17

Several times in today’s reading from John we have heard our Lord say; “I am …”. So I wanted to look back at each of these and put them all together in one place.

John 6: 35 Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

48 I am the bread of life.

51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

John 8: 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

John 9: While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

John 10: Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.

11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

14 I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—

36 what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?

John 11: 25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;

John 13: 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.

John 14: Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

As we finish our reading of the Gospel of John, we’ll hear other times when Jesus says; “I am”. Listen for each one and listen for what Jesus is saying to you through them.

You might be wondering why I got so caught up with the two simple words, “I am.” Go with me back into the Old Testament to when Moses asked God to reveal God’s name to him. How did God say that Moses and Moses’ people would know God? Exodus 3: 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” So, in our readings today, we hear Jesus identifying himself with God who said; “ I am who I am.”

Another important verse in our readings today was John 13: 34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. As we live out all our days, may we seek to do just that.

O God, the great I AM, thanks for revealing all these qualities about our Lord Jesus Christ who is; the bread of life, light of the world, the gate for the sheep, the Good Shepherd, God’s Son, the resurrection and the life, the way and the truth and the life, and the vine. Through Him you have revealed to us how we can receive the gift of real life now and one day the gift of eternal life. Help us to fully trust in him and seek to love him and love others as you have loved us. Forgive us for the many times we have not loved you, nor trusted or obeyed you, help us even now seek to abide in you for you are the vine and we are the branches. Amen.

Have you ever wanted to memorize some of God’s word? In today’s reading is the shortest verse in the Bible; John 11:35 “Jesus wept.” So, now if you are ever asked to quote a verse of scripture you can easily do just that.
