Devotion Day 56 - Through the Bible in 90 days

Next reading: Day 56 – Jeremiah 23:9 – 33:22 – Finally we get some words of hope in Jeremiah. It’s been doom and gloom, judgment of God and death and exile of God’s people. But in our reading today we hear some words of hope; after 70 years God will return his people to the land he promised them and a king in the line of David will once again sit upon the throne.

Chapter 29 is a good one to reread, for in it we hear God’s words of promise to those in exile. I particularly liked the following.

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

These are words we can hold on to in times of crisis. These are words we can trust in day in and day out. Even on the darkest day, these words ring true for they are the will and purpose of God. Trust and believe in God.

God then affirms these very words later on in Jeremiah 32:40-41a.

I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me. I will rejoice in doing them good

Well we are nearly 2/3 of the way through God’s word. Once we finish Jeremiah we will be 2/3 of the way through God’s word. It’s a day by day journey with God; God who loves us and plans for us to prosper, and give us hope and a future. Thanks be to God. Amen.
