Devotion Day 48 – Through the Bible in 90 days

Day 48 – Ecclesiastes 3:1 –Song of Songs 8:14

I’ve shared Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 at many a funeral service and I remember the song of the 60’s;; “Turn, Turn, Turn” made famous by the Byrds.

Here’s a you tube rendering of the song.

A couple lines I’d add to Ecclesiastes 3 are these.

There is a time to get your driver’s license and a time to give it up.

There is a time to live in your own home and a time to move into a place you can get some assistance.

Here’s what I’ll take away from our readings in Ecclesiastes.

15 So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun. (8:15)

Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. (9:7)

I do believe God wants us to enjoy life. God created all that is including this time that we are living and he wants us to enjoy it. If you are like me, you spend way too much time worrying about tomorrow or regretting the past. And when I do this I end up not enjoying the moment that is before me. As we’ll hear our Lord saying, so may we do.

31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:31-34)

Today, make it your goal to enjoy this day. Enjoy it even if it is a day filled with more downs than ups, more clouds than sunshine. Enjoy this day that God did not promise you, yet is giving unto you.

In reading the book of Song of Songs, I’ve always had difficulty in hearing a word of God to me through it. It’s great poetry of a love between a man and a woman. Some have tried to hear it as telling of God’s great love for us and desire to be with us and our desire to be with God. I’m just not sure. I enjoy reading it for simply the love between one of Solomon’s many wives and him.

In Ecclesiastes we heard; “Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, ….. (9:9) Maybe this is what the Song of Songs is trying to say, enjoy your wife and may your wife enjoy you.

What do you take away from our reading of Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs?

I’ll conclude today’s devotion with the closing words from the book of Ecclesiastes. (12:13-14)

13 Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the duty of all mankind.
14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.

O Lord, teach us to enjoy today, this moment and not worry too much about the next. Help us enjoy all that you place before us and especially the special people of our life; family, friends and even the stranger whom we meet this day. May we enjoy all you bless our day with. For me this will include having the pleasure of performing two weddings one in the midst of Halloween decorations at the Senior Friendship Site here in Forsyth and one at the church. May these be special moments for the couples and family and friends. Amen.

Now we’ll move into the prophets. First the major prophets and then the twelve minor prophets.
