Devotion Day 46 – Through the Bible in 90 days

Day 46 – Proverbs 7:1 – 20:21 – My thoughts today.

In Proverbs 8:22-23 we hear that wisdom was the first of God’s creation, brought forth before anything was. “The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works (or way, or dominion), before his deeds of old; I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began.” So, throughout time God’s ways are permeated with wisdom; His wisdom that was the first of his creation.

Here’s some verses regarding the fear of the Lord.

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Proverbs 14:26 & 27 He who fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge.

27The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turn a man from the snares of death.

15:33 The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor.

For me as I said yesterday, fear of the Lord, means high respect, reverence, holy awe for God is God.

Here are some of the other proverbs I liked;

11: 25 A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

11:28 Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.

13:18 He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.

16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

16:31 Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life. (Guess I have many righteous people in my congregation, and I am one as well.)

Many of the proverbs didn’t make sense to me, but maybe on another occasion would speak to me. The book of Proverbs is one you could go to when wanting a word for your situation and just read until you find one that speaks to you and then sit with it a while, letting it speak to your heart, mind and soul.

The verses I’ll hold on to for today is the ones mentioning the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom.

O Lord, may I give you proper respect and always hold you in the upper chambers of my heart, my mind and my soul. May you have first place in my life and thus be able to guide all my ways. I give thanks that you are God and that you are holy and just in all your ways. Amen.
