Devotion Day 28 – Through the Bible in 90 Days

Day 28 – 2nd Kings 15:27 – 25:30 – Finally we hear of two good kings; Hezekiah and Josiah. Josiah became king when he was only eight years old. How did he get so wise, was it a mother’s or grandmother’s influence? Scripture doesn’t really tell us. Josiah had been prophesied about back in 1st Kings 13:1-3 –

By the word of the Lord a man of God came from Judah to Bethel, as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering. He cried out against the altar by the word of the Lord: “O altar, altar! This is what the Lord says: ‘A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who now make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.’” That same day the man of God gave a sign: “This is the sign the Lord has declared: The altar will be split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out.”

One of the things I’ve picked up in my readings so far is this; God does what God says God will do. God promises good when his people follow him, good comes to his people. God promises to discipline his people when they stray from his ways, King Jeroboam was one of the worst in this, and evil will come upon them. God does what God says he will do.

In our readings today we hear of the kingdom of Israel being invaded and conquered and all the people sent into exile, except the poorest of the poor. Then even with Hezekiah and Josiah, the kings following them in Judah followed in the ways of the kings of Israel and did evil in God’s sight. So even Judah is invaded and conquered, all the treasures of God’s holy temple distributed to foreign kings, the temple and palaces burnt down. And now we find God’s people in a time of exile from the land that God had promised them and given them, for they were not faithful unto God.

This morning what I hear God saying unto me, unto us, is – trust in God and seek to follow all God’s ways. Choose God and thus choose life. For in choosing to worship others gods, death and destruction came upon God’s people. So, today I choose God; choose real abundant life.

O Lord, help me see where I stray from your ways and follow the ways of gods of this world. Help me see, where I place my trust in others, in things, instead of you. Then guide me to love thee and serve thee with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. Amen.

Now on to a review of a lot of what we’ve read thus far; for now we’ll turn to the books of 1st and 2nd Chronicles and then move into Ezra and Nehemiah which will move us into the next phase of the people of Israel. We are now almost a 3rd of the way through God’s word; kind of amazing when you think of all we’ve covered.

God’s blessings upon us all as we continue our journey through his Holy Word.
