Devotion Day 19 – Through the Bible 90 days

Day 19 – Judges 15:13 – 1st Samuel 2:29 – in today’s readings we hear a lot about the roll of women in the history of Israel. We get to hear about Deliluh – a prostitute who ends up working for Samson’s enemies, Ruth – a foreigner, but one who chose to return with Naomi to Naomi’s home Bethlehem and then also Hannah who dedicates her first born unto the Lord’s service.

In our readings we hear how women served God and how they worked against God. It’s really not too different from the stories we hear about the men in God’s word.

I give thanks that women like Ruth and Hannah are mentioned, in fact Ruth has a whole book dedicated to her, for from them we learn of the faithfulness of women who loved God.

The story of Ruth is interesting, for in it we hear of a foreigner, who chooses to abide with her mother-in-law even after the father-in-law had died and both their sons. Ruth’s statement to Naomi is what she’s remembered for, besides being the great grandmother of King David.

“Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried.”

Ruth left her homeland, her family, to return with Naomi to Bethlehem. She made her new home there and provided for Naomi her mother-in-law. Ruth’s faithfulness is what stands out and through her faithfulness will come one to lead God’s people, King David, and then years later even God’s very own son; Jesus.

Today, give thanks for the women of faith in your life. I give thanks for my Grandmother who helped nurture God’s love for me and my love for God.

You women reading this devotion today, know that through you and your faith God does great things. Amen.

The following is a note my uncle found in my grandmother’s Bible and shared with me. Enjoy.
