Day 17 Devotion, Through the Bible in 90 days

Day 17; Joshua 15:1 – Judges 3:27 – Two things really stood out for me in today’s reading; what areas each family of Israel would receive and one of Joshua’s final statements.

First off the areas that would be settled and by whom, here are a couple of links to maps that help with this. There is some variation between the two and I looked several places and couldn’t determine which may be more accurate.

I find it interesting to see what lands were given to whom, and all this helps make sense of even the struggles in that region up to our very day.

The quote from Joshua comes from Joshua 24:14-15.

14 “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” What strikes me about Joshua’s statement is how centered he was in God. It didn’t matter what others did, he was going to serve the Lord.

The question I’m asking myself is whom do I serve? God, the giver of life, the one who sent His Son for us? Or do I serve God’s of our own creation? I strive to serve God revealed unto us through Jesus Christ, but I know I slip up and worship and serve gods of our own making.

O Lord, may I keep my focus upon thee and your love for all people. May I seek to hear your word clearly and in it discover more and more about Thee. May it be You that I seek to serve this day and every day.

By the way; did you notice a refrain in our readings today. It was mentioned a couple of times or more. “14 “Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed. (Joshua 23:14)

Not one of the promises of God has failed. Friends that was true in Joshua’s day, it is still true in our day and will be true till the end of time. Thanks be to God. Amen.
