Day 10 Devotion, 90 Days through the Bible

Day 10 Readings Leviticus 26:27 – Numbers 8:14

Imagine being responsible for all the people in either Phoenix, Arizona or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is what my best guess is for the number of the Israelites during the time of the census in the wilderness. Imagine, having to coordinate the moves and provide for all of them. Yet, God did as we have heard and will read more about later. The Israelites, maybe 1 million 400 or 500 thousand, were quite the mobile community, a community mostly on foot.

In our readings it mentions covering the Ark and Table with Sea Cow Hides. I wondered what these were, so I looked it up. Here is what I found.

As I was reading chapter seven the Christmas song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” came to mind. On the first day, second day, third day, fourth day, fifth day, sixth day, seventh day, eighth day, ninth day, tenth day, eleventh day and on the twelfth day of the dedication of the Tabernacle the Israelites gave unto God. ….. Lots of silver and gold went into furnishing the temple with plates, bowls and vessels.

Something that bothered me in our readings today was that there was a test for an unfaithful wife, but nothing is said of a test for an unfaithful husband. In the Old Testament, wives were seen and treated as the “property” of their husband. I’m glad today both husband and wives are called to faithfulness in the covenant of marriage.

In our reading we have heard of the different roles of the different family lines from Joshua. Each person had their place in helping. What is your role in helping the church? What role do you play in helping with worshiping and serving God the giver of life and salvation? Some of you may be thinking, well I’m not the pastor or the liturgist, nor am I part of the choir; my role is to come and receive the word. Yes, but everyone gathered is there to worship and praise God who was, who is and who will always be. So, your praise, your prayers, and your presence ads a lot to our doing what we were created to do, worship and serve God.

O God, this day may I give thanks for your calling me to be a part of your Church and your calling me to help guide 120 members of your body and about 40 faithful friends of your church. Moses lead over a million, may I be faithful in leading these your beloved children. Amen.
