90 Days through Bible – day 2

Day 2 – Genesis 17:1 – Genesis 28:19

What stands out to me in our readings for today is laughter. First we have Abram laughing;  17:17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” and then Sarah laughing; 18:11 Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?”

And to their laughter God said; 18:13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son.”

I can recall times I’ve laughed at what God said he’d do and times I’ve told God what I would and would not do. Each and every time God has shown what he can do by doing that which he said he’d do and by sending me places I told him I wouldn’t go. In each and every situation I can say clearly and openly that God has showed his goodness and love and sense of humor.

I once heard that if you really want to make God laugh, simply tell God about your plans.

O God, thanks for forgiving me for laughing at your will and your ways and for thinking I knew better than you did. Thanks for showing me that the places I didn’t want to go, were exactly where I needed to go to fully experience your grace and your love. Thanks be to you, O God. Amen.
