Daily Devotion Tuesday, August 28th

Tuesday, August 28, 2012 – Psalm 146; Job 6:1-4, 8-15, 21; Acts 9:32-43 and John 6:60-71

John 6:60-71 – 60When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” 61But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, “Does this offend you? 62Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64But among you there are some who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. 65And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.”

66Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him.

Which of Jesus’ teaching is difficult for you to understand and follow? The one that comes to me is; “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.” (Matthew 16:25) Yet, Jesus says clearly today unto us, “It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless.” It seems that Jesus is calling us away from focusing upon our life and turning our focus upon Him and the gift of real life. The gift that comes to us as we trust in him and focus upon him.

Friends we know that Jesus died and then rose and finally ascended unto heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, seated upon the throne of God. So, doesn’t it seem logical that we trust in this one who offers us real, abundant life. Not life abundant in the things of this world, but life abundant with the blessings of God, that God pours out upon all who believe and trust in him.

Yet, I find that I cling to things of this world. That I find it difficult to let go and let God in a lot of situations. I cling to the way things have been.

What teaching of Jesus’ do you find it difficult to fully believe in and follow him? What teaching of Jesus’ comes to you? What might happen in you trusted in Jesus’ teaching and fully followed him?

Friends, I find my journey with Jesus to be just that, a journey. Sometimes Jesus is walking by my side, sometimes I’m trying to lead him, at others he truly is in the lead showing me the way and at still other times, Jesus is behind me giving the gentle and sometimes not so gentle push in the right direction. Sometimes I wander off on my own path, but thanks be to God, for God calls me back and helps me see the path I should be going on.

Today, seek to fully trust in Jesus the Christ and let his ways guide you in your ways.

O Christ, we thank you for you are the way, the truth and the life. Help us trust in you, and follow you for you will guide us to real life that begins even today. Amen.

Psalm 146 – 1   Praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD, O my soul!
2   I will praise the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God all my life long. …

5   Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God,
6   who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them;
who keeps faith forever;
7        who executes justice for the oppressed;
who gives food to the hungry. ..

10c Praise the LORD!
