Daily Devotion Thursday, August 23rd

Thursday, August 23, 2012 – Psalm 36; Job 1:1-22; Acts 8:26-40 and John 6:16-27

John 6:16-27 – 25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.”

Too often in this life I find myself chasing after that which perishes, instead of that which endures for eternal life. Here are some of the things I find myself chasing after, things that will perish: personal relationships, food, house, car, and cash.

Our reading from the Old Testament begins our readings from the book of Job. A book that tells of one who had everything and lost it yet held on to his faith and in the end his relationship with God was even strengthened.

Our Lord called the people that day and calls us to work for food that endures for eternal life. He’s calling them and us to deepen their relationship with him, the one who is the bread of life and the cup of salvation.

What do you find yourself chasing after today? Once you catch it, how long might it sustain you?

On the other hand, in seeking to deepen your relationship with Jesus the Christ, you will find yourself being given the gift that endures forever. In seeking to abide in Christ you will find yourself nurtured today and fed with what endures forever.

O Lord, forgive me for seeking after that which does not endure. May I turn to thee, seeking that which you offer through an abiding relationship. May I put my trust and faith in thee the one that will not perish instead of the things of this world all that will perish. Amen.

Psalm 36 – 5   Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
6   Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your judgments are like the great deep;
you save humans and animals alike, O LORD.

7   How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8   They feast on the abundance of your house,
and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
9   For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
